Death Valley Boundary Wall V

December 2018

Death Valley Boundary Wall (Phase 5) was an adobe restoration project that I led for Cornerstones Community Partnerships at Death Valley National Park. We continued restoring sections of an adobe boundary wall which was originally built by the CCC in the 1940s. This phase of the project focused on closing a large corner section of the wall. Two interns and various park volunteers helped us make adobe blocks and build the wall. Once again, we employed a double-wythe (16 inch) adobe wall technique using natural adobe bricks and mortar. All of the adobe blocks used for this phase of the project (about 2,500) were made on site by hand. Special lime-stabilized adobe blocks were also made and used to cap the wall.
