Pioneertown Horno

Earth Work | 2019

Pioneertown Horno was a design & construction workshop that I co-taught with Ben Loescher from Adobe is not Software. This was a follow-up project to help Adobe is not Software promote their mission of "advancing adobe construction in California". The oven foundation was made from a poured soil cement mix. The base is made of 10" x 14" x 3.5" stabilized adobe blocks. The dome's inside diameter is 45". The oven walls are approximately 10 inches thick. The door opening is approximately 15 inches wide by 12 inches high. The oven materials (clay-rich soil and coarse construction sand) were all sourced locally. We finished the oven with two coats of natural earthen plaster stabilized with lots of chopped straw.
